The Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross
2005 South Columbia Place
Decatur, GA
January first is not only the birth of the new year. For African Americans it's a day to celebrate freedom.
On January 1st 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing slaves from bondage. Jubilee Day pays tribute to that historical document.
Jubilee Day is also a way to educate young men and women on the their heritage and past. A way to teach how far African Americans have come.
On that August day when Martin Luther King gave his speech, he spoke of Lincoln's decree as a great beacon of hope. that hope still lives on today as song, prayer and words.
